You'll probably know Lauren Mayberry best as one third of Scottish trio, CHVRCHES, alongside Iain Cook and Martin Doherty. The synth outfit's debut album 'The Bones Of What You Believe' came out ten years ago, and understandably, Mayberry has been looking into further creative outlets. Her beguiling debut single, 'Are You Awake?', dropped earlier in the month. Listen below.
Working with well-known pop collaborators Tobias Jesso Jr (Sia, Adele) and Matthew Koma (Carly Rae Jepson, Britney Spears), 'Are You Awake?' is perhaps unexpectedly melancholic in relation to the production history of the aforementioned duo, as well as much of Mayberry's previous output. A departure from the typical CHVRCHES sound regardless, and a self-confessed piano ballad.
The contemplative track has a yearning sentiment throughout, with Mayberry's pleading lyrics, reminding us of the underrated 'Still Fighting It' from Ben Folds' 2001 'Rockin' The Suburbs' album. Expect to hear 'Are You Awake?' over the credits of a TV show or film sooner rather than later.
