It's not often that you see bands come together across various cities, let alone various countries, but synth-pop trio Render Ghosts have really taken working from home to heart. Based across London and Utrecht, Tamara van Esch, Tom Wilson, and Iain Chambers came together in 2020 to form Render Ghosts, releasing their compelling electronic-led self-titled debut album earlier this year.
The three musicians have come from fairly disparate musical backgrounds - Dutch singer-songwriter van Esch also operates solo under their own name, classically-trained Wilson completed a PhD in composition, and sound artist Chambers is a founding member of experimental musical outfit Langham Research Centre. Something of a digital age super-group, one might claim.
Catchy synth-pop debut track 'Eye Rhyme' slipped out of Santa's sack of gifts as a pre-Christmas treat in December 2021, providing a nostalgic throwback to the electro-meets-baroque-pop of the perenially under-rated Theoretical Girl. Having drip-fed a few new songs subsequently, such as 'Albany' and 'Bad Times', Render Ghosts released their debut album at the tail-end of March 2022.
Notes of CHVRCHES, St Vincent, and Everything Everything shine through, as the record traverses dancier efforts (beginning with album opener 'Keeping My Number') alongside more introspective offerings, such as the arresting 'Director'. The band will finally be unveiling their tracks in a live setting with their much-anticipated debut gig at The Finsbury in London on Friday 27th May, around 9pm.
