We only recently found out Sophie Payten aka Aussie musician Gordi is a qualified medical doctor, who has stepped back into her duties as a result of the global pandemic. And that’s on top of her incredible work as a solo artist. It’s unreal how talented some people are, as can be seen on the a02Sk mix of her brilliant latest release ‘Unready’.
There’s something intrinsically emotional about Gordi’s work, perhaps carried forth by her incredible and distinctive vocal sound – her take on Linkin Park’s 'In The End' emphasised its lyrics, which had already developed a deeper meaning following the passing of frontman Chester Bennington. 'Unready' (a02Sk) gives the original almost-choral version an added boost, reminiscent of countryman Owen Rabbit and his vastly underrated shot-to-the-arm 'Denny’s'.
Sadly, this alt version hasn’t made it onto Gordi’s forthcoming second album, 'Our Two Skins', although the original has been retained. We’ll let her off on this one though because during the month of June 2020, Gordi will be donating all proceeds from Bandcamp sales of 'Unready' during June to the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund.
