One of the very first times we wrote about music was after seeing Hot Club de Paris at the first edition of The Great Escape Festival in Brighton way back in 2006. An outfit whose competing time signatures, cheeky lyricism, and penchant for melodies saw them develop a cult following of sorts, releasing three albums through Moshi Moshi. Vocalist-bassist Paul Rafferty adopted a heavier approach in his following band Bad Meds and has again changed tack with new solo outfit, Doomshakalaka. Listen to debut track 'Black Balloons' below.

The Dananananaykroyd-esque Doomshakalaka moniker is obviously inspired by the celebratory phrase "Boomshakalaka", to which Rafferty offers a suitably miserable twist. Indeed, initially 'Black Balloons' may seem to also channel a sense of misery, and its toned down opening contrasts much of his previous music. However, this debut release isn't afraid to change gears with sparkling guitar work spread nicely across its six-and-a-half minute run time, and an extended outro that leaves us longing for more.
