It's often disappointing to hear about a band calling it quits - often after years of literal blood, sweat, and tears. Kendal's finest musical quartet Wild Beasts were fortunate enough to gather accolades and success along the way, signing to Domino Records and receiving a Mercury Music Prize nomination, before ending in early 2018. From disappointment to excitement, band member Thomas Fleming has now re-emerged as One True Pairing, with a head-turning eponymous debut single.
Tom Fleming's re-appearance follows fellow member Hayden Thorpe's solo efforts earlier in 2019, and joins his former associate in releasing new material with the backing of his old label, Domino. On his new One True Pairing guise, Fleming explains: "[it's] a name taken from internet fan fiction, where you write the perfect relationship you always wished existed. The idea of Prince Charming and Helpless Princess living happily after is no fun at all."
Hearing Fleming's booming baritone on 'One True Pairing' feels both welcome and familiar, although he opts for more incongruous sounds otherwise across the track with off-kilter synths and jarring guitar riffs featuring prominently. The track's video is similarly leftfield, directed by Clarence Clarity - formerly Adam Crisp of Elle Milano/Entrepreneurs, and now considerably more famous for his production work with Rina Sawayama.
