In a break from our regular programming, we bring you the latest freestyle from 2016 MOBO Best Female Act Lady Leshurr. Mainly because 'Horrid' appropriates the classic primary school playground phrase "liar, liar, pants on fire". No, really, it does. Having initially shared an unfinished version of the track as a freestyle rap on social media earlier this week, she's impressively managed to bash out an excellent studio version and a video in about 48 hours, which you can check out below.
'Horrid' showcases Lady Leshurr's rapid-fire, Midlands-accented flows and her love of onomatopoeia, set against a striking strings-laden backdrop. The track's production somewhat brings proceedings back to our standard fare - led by Teddy Music, formerly known as Silencer, one of the people behind 'Pow 2011', the callback single from one time "grindie" (the Statik-led, short-lived grime x indie scene of the mid-noughties) superstar Lethal Bizzle.
Unusually, for such an established artist, Lady Leshurr doesn't seem to have an official website (and uses a Hotmail account for booking enquiries) but seeing as her unconventional ways have got her to pretty much the top of the UK grime scene, we'll "allow it" or some such. Expect plenty more from her in 2019.
