As we settle into the year, it could be argued that this column is a good few months late. I would argue that we have only just touched the tip of what 2015 has to offer in television land. Here are just some of the shows that will be making an appearance in 2015, fingers crossed!
'Empire'
The buzz around 'Empire' in the US has been crazy, with strong critic reviews and every talk show seemingly going crazy for it. Starring Terence Howard and Taraji P. Henson ('Hustle & Flow'), as a hip hop family empire that is full of takeovers and takedowns. Currently no UK channel has picked up the rights to 'Empire' but with the big ratings and the buzz, I believe we could be seeing this soon to be hit show on our small screens.
'Jane The Virgin'
When I first heard about 'Jane The Virgin', I did not think it would even be given 13 episodes. Honestly it seems like a dumb show, however I cannot ignore the fact that the star Gina Rodriguez won a Golden Globe best comedy actress for her work on the show. After Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated whilst having a check up, her life is changed forever when she becomes pregnant. E4 are delivering this comedy-drama later this year.
'Game Of Thrones'
One of the TV’s hottest shows is making its return in April - full of blood, sweat, and dead bodies 'Game Of Thrones' has us routing for our favourite characters until they are killed off. My plan this year will be to support Sophie Turner’s Sansa Stark, as whoever I seem to support after a while gets killed off. As the most pirated show for the past three years, it will be interesting to see if they can still hold on to the title for 2015.
'Coalition'
As we are in a general election year, we will be hearing a lot about politics and seeing live television debates. Channel 4 are leading the way with all these political dramas such as 'UKIP: The First 100 Days' but the one to look out for is 'Coalition' - arguably the Nick Clegg story. Knowing Channel 4, this will probably not put Nick Clegg in a good light, however I doubt this will hurt his career. Get ready for constant political talk up until May.
'Thunderbirds Are Go!'
2015 would not be complete without a reboot and as noted in Saam's recent On Camera column, this year we get to go back to Tracy Island with 'Thunderbirds Are Go!'. The 1960s show has been updated and given a modern feel, with slightly scary animation. ITV is fully behind International Rescue, and has already commissioned a second series to this show, so 'Thunderbirds Are Go', until at least 2017.
'Heroes Reborn'
Since the end of 'Heroes' back in 2010 there have been many rumours of a movie or a reboot, however last year NBC confirmed that 'Heroes Reborn' will be on our screens by the summer. It is not fully clear who will be reappear from the original cast, however none of Zachary Quinto (Skylar), Hayden Panettiere (Claire Bennet), Milo Ventimiglia (Peter Petrelli), and Ali Larter (Nikki/Jessica/Tracey) will be appearing. Hopefully 'Heroes Reborn' will be fresh and original.
'True Detective'
After an amazing first series, the second series of 'True Detective' has a lot to live up to. Starring in the second series will be Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn, alongside Rachel McAdams and Taylor Kitsch. Not a lot has been leaked about the direction the new cast will take, however I am hopefully that they will keep us as hooked as the first series did. 'True Detective' will be back in the summer.
'Orange Is The New Black'
I have been craving my fix of chocolate and vanilla swirl since the end of series two. Thankfully series three had already been commissioned, so I knew I would be getting my addiction sorted. Piper (Taylor Schilling) and the gang will be back on Netflix, with Laura Prepon's Alex becoming a series regular for this third instalment. Netflix have not officially released the premiere date but in previous years, 'Orange Is The New Black' has usually been released in the late summer.
