It's been a couple of years since the last album from Canadian outfit Braids, and a couple more years since I saw the band play in a weird bar on Brighton pier at The Great Escape 2011. They're back with the Purity Ring-esque 'Miniskirt', the first taste of album number three, April's 'Deep In The Iris'.
"I’m not a man-eater, I enjoy them like cake. But in my position I’m the slut, I’m the bitch, I’m the whore, the one you hate." 'Miniskirt' adopts a feminist outlook that signals something darker for the trio's latest output. The hypnotic dream-pop of the earlier days has been replaced by a more complex, mutating electronic sound - which really comes into its own in the more percussive latter half of 'Miniskirt'.
'Deep In The Iris' is out in April, through Arbutus Records. Find more info at braidsmusic.com.
