It's been a while since we've written about the enigmatic Berlin-based Marlais but he's been racking up the plays (22,000+ for 'Love Is Teasin'') on Soundcloud, thanks to support from his old pals Alt-J on Facebook. In this fickle musical world, new track 'Edward' has yet to break 1000 plays so it's time for us to step in again. Hear both tracks below.
'Edward' samples Jean Ritchie's a capella vocal take on this murder ballad, adding a haunting piano line and foreboding string flourishes to the morbid lyrics and meaning. A suitably ominous re-imagining of this traditional folk offering from [EDITED: Initially, this was where Marlais' actual name was but he asked us to remove it - "I am not going for a mystery thing, I just don't want my name out there like that - that's why I use a pseudonym, for a bit of privacy."]
