Words: Saam Das
I've been waiting to post about Laura Bettinson's new wonky pop (remember that?) guise FEMME, having written positive things about her collaboration with Nigel Godrich and Joey Waronker under the UltraĆsta name. Indeed, I also quite enjoyed her work as Dimbleby & Capper but it took listening to new single 'Heartbeat' to convince me to get firmly back on the Bettinson bandwagon.
The follow up to double A-side debut single 'Educated'/'Double Trouble' is another double A-side, 'Fever Boy'/'Heartbeat'. (In the meantime, she's been back in the collaborating game again, with FTSE.) 'Heartbeat' evokes MIA at her most playful, and Oh Land at her most melodic with its glorious singalong hooks. "He wanted me for free but you can't have me, no you can't have me." It's like the 'Single Ladies' of 2013 but with less "uh ohs", and instead a mere request for more of the sassy same please, Laura.
