I think there's pretty much three camps when it comes to covers: Type A - who consider many such acts almost sacrilegious / Type B - who are generally apathetic about the idea and execution of a cover / Type C - those who often enjoy a revised edition to an original, even if it sometimes approaches karaoke. I'd largely pop myself in the Type C bracket, and I'm very much enjoying The Night VI's version of 'I Would Die 4 U' by Prince.
I've generally got a soft spot for 'I Would Die 4 U' - something actually sparked by a cover, by French artist Space Cowboy, back in 2003. (Have a listen to that cover below.) Similarly, I rather liked the new single from Silhouettes mostly because it reminded me of 'I Would Die 4 U'. The Night VI version certainly embraces Prince's sense of melodrama, whilst offering something different with its powerful female vocal.
The cover is actually part of a series by the Anglo-French six piece, who put out an EP on Parlophone earlier in the year - led by 'Thinking Of You', which you can also check out below. Expect to hear more original new things from The Night VI in the new year but there's still two covers to come in their set of six.
