Surfacing: John & Garry [New Band]

Words: Saam Das

It's becoming an increasing rarity to be emailed music that I actually like enough to write about. But sometimes it's the bands without the labels and without the PRs that manage to make themselves heard - just on the strength of their music. And a simple, polite, and personal submission. Step forward, John & Garry, a sibling duo with a touch of Idlewild and Biffy Clyro to them.

The Kerr brothers have been writing and recording at home in Ayrshire, and the result is perhaps surprisingly accomplished. They cite influences such as The National, Bon Iver, and Doves - understandably so considering the emotive lyrical and vocal output. Add to that a cover of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', and you have a pretty solid set of influences.

Their two most recent tracks are the most impressive, and it shouldn't be long before they receive more attention. Which shouldn't be too hard as they don't seem to have had any coverage yet. 'Let Me In' is shaded by 'Hide Away', proving new guitar music is as strong as ever. Listen to the tracks and download them below for free. Chalk this up as a win for all you bedroom recording artists.
