Last one was in June so it’s time for a sequel to the first Sunday Selection column. Some damn fine recent winners are headed by the quartet of Burning Condors, Black Onassis, Flash Bang Band and last week’s selection The Ten Thousand.
For those who don’t follow it, the Sunday Selection features the best of the week from my inbox – ‘best’ according to me anyway – and goes out on a Sunday (sic) on the FG Twitter and Facebook airwaves. So if you missed it, shame on you and here are just some of the highlights:
Burning Condors
Their debut album, 'Round Our Way' comes out in early September and from the tracks I’ve heard it very much continues the good work of the single 'Dirty Girl' that won them the Sunday Selection back in June. Fuzzy slide guitars and a rockabilly edge give these Brits a very US influenced sound. Indeed the album was recorded in Nashville but I think it promises to put them firmly on the map here in Blighty.Black Onassis
This is the comeback band formed by ex-Kasabian Chris Karloff, so it’s not such an outrageous discovery on my part and the influence from the past is palpable. But these things don’t always work out and yet there was something in the insistent beat of 'Brain', featuring Ben Gautrey (The Cooper Temple Clause) on vocals that couldn’t be denied. Their debut album 'Desensitized' comes out on September 23rd. Watch the video for 'Brain' above or download it for free here:
Flash Bang Band
Brighton’s Flash Bang Band picked up the accolade back in June and their debut album 'Bite Your Tongue' comes out on August 26th. The power trio caught my eye with the funky feet video for their single 'If You’re Driving'. It’s such a cheery track that proudly flaunts its local influences – just like a stick of rock with Brighton stamped all the way through. And keep an eye out for the album, which should be ideal listening for late summer acid garage parties.
The Ten Thousand
Just the other week the video for 'Flight Inertia’ really impressed and landed this band from LA the Sunday Selection. I think you’ll agree the video is neat, and even better, the debut EP 'Nobody Gets Hurt', featuring that track as one of four, is free to download below. Opener 'Juneteenth' almost brings us back to the Burning Condors in flavour and make sure to catch closer 'City of Angles'. The Ten Thousand have already supported the likes of FG faves Haim and I figure they'll go a lot further.
