Eighteen-year-old New Zealand-based musician and producer Sam Perry, otherwise known as Zen Mantra, spent the majority of 2012 writing and recording songs in his bedroom. His grand vision of wanting to create music with the energy of punk and the atmospheric qualities of psychedelia has left him with a very distinct sound that’s a perfect fit for the summer.
Debut single 'Fossils' is a two and a half minute euphoric pop song, which really shows off his skill at crafting interesting melodies. The track is taken from his debut album, 'How Many Padmes Hum?', which I can only hope will be full of equally riff-laden tracks with hugely anthemic choruses. The album was self-produced by Sam Perry and mastered by Kody Neilson (Opossom / UMO) and I have no doubt will be worth checking out.
With obvious talent at such a young age, I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from Zen Mantra after this impressive debut single. The album, 'How Many Padmes Hum?', is out this week in the UK (and the rest of the world) via Stroll On Records. Stream the album in full below.
