When we last wrote about Marlais and their excellent remix of Alt-J's 'Dissolve Me', we hadn't the foggiest who they were. But now the pieces of puzzle have come into place, to co-incide with a new Marlais track. Listen to the hypnotic 'Bright Night'.
I rather unexpectedly found out more about Marlais from our friend Jon Mason, who I discovered was a former bandmate of Marlais in a band called The Peppermint Lounge. Jon also has a new project called Leisure, but perhaps more on that later. For now, more on 'Bright Night' - a beautifully evolving number with mesmeric beats and evocative strings.
'Bright Night' is smoother fare than some of the previous Marlais offerings, which extend his electronica in a much more experimental direction - such as on 'Of All Mysteries'. I'm more of a fan of less experimental material, with the orchestral 'Camille' another highlight. Either way, keep an eye out for more from the majestic Marlais.
[EDITED: Initially, Marlais' actual name appeared in the article but he asked us to remove it - "I am not going for a mystery thing, I just don't want my name out there like that - that's why I use a pseudonym, for a bit of privacy." Check out our interview with Jon and his Leisure outfit to make up for that.]
