Catherine Pockson and Bob Matthews look set for a promising 2013, finally releasing their debut album as Alpines later this year. I hope anyway, as that's pretty much what I said at the start of 2012. To keep us ticking over, they've delivered a terrific new single, 'Lights', which you can listen to below.
The stripped back, melancholic intro of 'Lights' is slightly unusual for Alpines, especially considering their thunderous recent collaboration with Sub Focus. Pockson's arresting vocals are the band's focal point, as per usual, although the drums slowly motor under the surface in an unexpectedly engaging fashion.
'Lights' seems to represent a significant step in the band's musical evolution - it's been over two years since we first featured Alpines, after all. The new single showcases their ambition, adopting elements of shoegaze, whilst also potentially appealing to a more mainstream audience. And unlike other so-called music fans, we think it'd be bloody great if they break the mainstream.
'Lights' is out now digitally. Find more info at alpinesmusic.com.
