Depending on your perspective, we either delay our new year Futuresounds (Ones To Watch/tips) list because we're disorganised, lazy or patient. Regardless, other sites generally post their lists well before Christmas. One name we expected to see a bit more of is Australian solo artist Matt Corby. Recent EP 'Into The Flame' marked his considerable talent. Listen to its powerful lead track 'Brother' below.
Corby's striking voice is reminiscent of the might of Jeff Buckley, while his music often has unexpected tendencies toward Wild Beasts. Such is the case on 'Brother', from the 'Into The Flame' EP, which also comes with a bonus topping of soul. No wonder it recently came away with the ARIA award for Song Of The Year.
It's likely that majestic heartfelt ballads like 'Untitled' off the EP will win many a heart in the UK. Indeed, judging from the rapturous reception to a live performance earlier in the year, Matt Corby is already well on his way to success on our fair shores. Not bad for a bloke who was runner-up on 'Australian Idol'.
