Since their support slot on the Spec-tour the other week, to say that I'm a fully paid up member of the Swim Deep fan club would be a little bit of an understatement. Aside from being almost surgically attached to my Swim Deep bracelet and rocking their tees on runs around Leeds, their latest release 'Honey' has clocked up well over 1000 plays on my iPod since its release earlier this month.
With a laissez-faire melody echoing around the sentiment "Don't just dream in your sleep it's just lazy", an example not just of lyrical excellence but also some bloody sound philosophy, 'Honey' verges on perfect. It's a track that lulls you into a false sense of security, serenely enjoying the repetitive catchy tones of the verse before the crashing chorus has you up and on your feet like a crazy woman (or maybe that's just me). And Swim Deep do that so well.
Guitar music may be on the "outs" (and to those naysayers, try and deny that there is anything cooler than a boy with a guitar), but it's bands like Swim Deep that are making the genre interesting again. 'Honey' bounces between an almost overloaded electronic sound to something sparse, beautiful, almost ethereal. And after listening to this, I'm surely not the only one that wants to dip dye my hair, throw on some tie-dye and head to B-town? Meet you all at the train station, yeah?
'Honey' was released on November 5th. The band head out on their debut headline tour in February 2013. Find more info at facebook.com/swimdeepuk.
