I'm a little worried that some youngsters may get confused between British indie band Spector and Russian-born solo artist extraordinaire Regina Spektor. Maybe not. Best known for her infectiously sublime 'Us', Spektor has returned with a new song that perhaps even exceeds the brilliance of her past efforts. Listen to the vivacious and unexpectedly different 'All The Rowboats', from the forthcoming 'What We Saw From The Cheap Seats' LP, below.
The odd thing about 'All The Rowboats' is that it's actually a rather old track - making exceedingly rare appearances in Spektor's live sets since at least 2005 - unsurprisingly being absolutely incredible even back then. Even more incredible is that according to Spektor, in the video below, she had forgot about 'All The Rowboats' and it was only brought back to life as she had found an old upload of the track thanks to an internet randomer.
The newer version adds immense production value, thanks in part to the versatile Mike Elizondo, who has collaborated with the likes of Dr Dre, Mastodon, Alanis Morrisette and Eminem. The hip-hop element rears its head in the pulsating beats which simply add to the greatness of Spektor's continued baroque piano-pop genius. The lyrics profoundly reflect upon exhibits in art galleries and museums, a particular delight considering my museum day job. With any luck, 'All The Rowboats' will prove equally timeless.
