Words: Saam Das
Fresh from their appearance in our bands to look out for during 2012, Dan Smith et al have dropped a film-inspired collaborative mixtape, featuring the likes of Maiday and To Kill A King. As in the spirit of mixtapes, it is free to share and download. Listen to it in full below and soak in the evocative "film credits" artwork.
The mixtape is a whirlwind of influences, dropping samples from the dialogue of films like 'Requiem For A Dream' and 'The Breakfast Club', and often juxtaposing them against early 90s dance classics of all things. Indeed, the opening track, 'Adagio For Strings', melds dialogue and the theme to the seminal war epic 'Platoon' with Haddaway's 1993 hit 'What Is Love?' before metamorphosing into Rihanna's 'We Found Love'.
'Adagio For Strings' is very much the embodiment of the mixtape overall - a borderline ridiculous concept but done so competently that it just....fits. The BASTILLE cover of City High's 'What Would You Do?' makes a re-appearance next, having made it to #1 on The Hype Machine's most popular chart. The rest of the mixtape comprises of cameos not only from fellow musicians but also from previous BASTILLE singles, among the dizzying mix of unexpected dance and hip hop influences.
Not everything works amazingly well - in fact, the cover of David Guetta's 'Titanium' is a bit painful - but there are plenty of highlights. I've included a couple to download below, and as an added bonus, you can watch Dan and Ralph of To Kill A King doing a separate/non-mixtape collaboration in the YouTube video below. It is, of course, quite excellent.
