Writing about the new BASTILLE EP yesterday reminded me about To Kill A King's latest EP. The bands have shared roots having studied at Leeds University and had I not perused To Kill A King's Soundcloud page last September, I may never have discovered BASTILLE. I wrote about To Kill A King not long after and they signed with EMI earlier this year. The 'My Crooked Saint' EP came out recently - accompanied by a 20 minute short film, which you can watch below.
The new EP follows up the 'Fictional State' single, which appeared at the end of May on Communion Records. 'My Crooked Saint' is the first proper release since signing with EMI, and is led off by 'Bloody Shirt', a live version of which we still have up for download in our first To Kill A King post.
'My Crooked Saint' is not a concept EP - as far as I can tell, anyway - but with the help of director Jack King, the band have put together a series of four videos (for each of the four EP tracks) which together comprise a short film. Incidentally, the short was filmed on the Brafferton Arbor, a street famous for Andrea Dunbar, the playwright whose life was captured eloquently in the recent documentary 'The Arbor'.
As for the EP tracks, 'Bloody Shirt' is certainly the standout - as compelling and anthemic as the first time we heard it. And just to bring things back full circle, BASTILLE have done a remix of the track, which you can download for free below. It's actually quite good. The EP short film is embedded above.
