Well, well, well. It turns out Paper Crows' new single sounds almost nothing like the old atmospheric Paper Crows recorded material. But having mentioned their "club beats" after seeing them live almost a year ago, perhaps it's surprisingly unsurprisingly that 'When Friends Survive' is almost Paper Crows gone europop.
There's little evidence of the Kate Bush, Bat For Lashes and/or Portishead influences that I mentioned in the past - although the beats on 'When Friends Survive' have some hints of the latter band. But honestly, someone like Sash seems a more appropriate reference.
I guess it's a particularly appropriate single considering the band are currently supporting purveyors of electro-pop, Fenech-Soler on tour across the UK. 'When Friends Survive' is also the first single on (dance DJ) Pete Tong's resurrected label, FFRR - it's a bit trancey, and a lot good. Listen for yourself below.
