Al Spx, aka Cold Specks, first appeared on the radar with the incredibly dark, yet strangely beautiful 'Holland'. It has since been announced that 'Holland' is to be released as a limited 7" single on October 17 with a rendition of 'Old Stepstone' as the b-side.
With a sound that she describes herself as "doom soul", it was her soulful vocals that shone through the minimal backing music and really grabbed my attention. Spx has favoured the minimal approach again on this track, choosing to have just her vocal and nothing else.
'Old Stepstone' is full of honest emotion and fragility, while perfectly showing off the gospel influences in her music, as well as the raw passion in her voice. Both tracks show why we have every right to be excited about the arrival of Cold Specks and are hopefully the start of many magnificent songs to come.
