There's very little information to be found online about Cold Specks, other than the fact she is 23-year-old Al Spx from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada, who now resides in London and makes the most beautiful music, describing it in her own words as "doom soul".
The only full studio track online, 'Holland', begins with strings that set the tone for her tale of death and mourning, and the incredible grief that comes with it. The music itself is very minimalistic, but it is the introduction of her soulful vocals that will send a shiver down your spine and instantly draw you in to share in her dark emotions.
The track slowly builds with the introduction of a simple beat and gospel-infused backing vocals, only to have all the music stripped away for the final few lines, really hitting home the emotive vocal talent of Spx - "We are many, we are many, we are dust. Into dust we'll all return".
Currently recording with producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi) and supporting Howling Bells on tour in the UK in September, Cold Specks are definitely ones to watch out for in the coming months.
