I don't really care much for awards shows/ceremonies (let alone just the nominations) and the Golden Globes are no exception. It is always nice to see things you've supported, or simply liked, be rewarded though. The Golden Globe award nominations momentarily overwhelmed my Twitter feed as everyone felt the need to live tweet their thoughts. Saying almost exactly the same things. As you can imagine, I wasn't overjoyed as I trudged through the tweets. I thought I'd add my thoughts here, instead.
The big news is that basically everyone is gobsmacked that the new Johnny Deep-Angelina Jolie film 'The Tourist' has received three Golden Globe nom noms. The film has been largely panned (unsurprisingly so, it looks pretty awful) although we may have a more charitable review up, as one of the other writers has seen it and said "it wasn't terrible". High praise, indeed.
Other possibly odd decisions include the appearance of 'Burlesque' and 'Love & Other Drugs', joining 'The Tourist' in the Best Comedy/Musical category. Of course, none of this means all that much if 'The Kids Are All Right' actually ends up winning that Golden Globe, as it really bloody ought to. Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy's nomination for Best Screenplay is probably a bit undeserved also, even though the film is impressive enough.
The rest of the nominations mainly go as expected, with 'The King's Speech' weighing in with the most nominations at seven, closely followed by 'The Fighter' and 'The Social Network' with six each. 'Inception' also weighs in with four noms, showing that the Globes haven't really strayed far from the general critical consensus.
It's also nice to see Sylvain Chomet's 'The Illusionist' get a nod in the Best Animated Film category. Especially as I'm starting to think that it probably won't receive an Oscar nomination, now that the 2011 animated feature category only has three nominations. Fingers crossed though.
