Basically, Virgin Media are running a competition for budding filmmakers to submit short films (by noon on Monday 28 June) of up to 140 seconds length and have the chance to win all kinds of pretty snazzy prizes. Most notably, one winner will receive £30,000 funding for their next film, while 12 people will also have their shorts screened in cinemas across the UK. Head to virginmediashorts.co.uk to enter. As it happens, I saw one of the 2008's winning short film in the cinema a couple of years ago, and I wanted to share that with you.

Entitled 'The Black Hole', "a sleep-deprived office worker accidentally discovers a black hole - and then greed gets the better of him...". The dark ending is what makes this particularly worthy of your attention. Directors Phil & Olly have also gone onto produce another short film, taking the darkness up a notch with 'Archaeology', which reminds me a bit of 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo'.
Pop along to the Virgin Media website and check out some of the shorts, perhaps you'll catch the early work of the next <"insert bigshot director here">. Indeed, almost all the top directors working today, including messrs Nolan, Gondry, and Scott, started out with shorts.
