"U-G-L-Y, YOU AIN'T GOT NO ALIBI." Earlier today, Marina Diamandis of Marina & The Diamonds tweeted that her record label was postponing the release of her latest video, 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' as she looks "ugly in it" and "we need more $ / time to paint out ugly parts". Someone has obviously been taking that Daphne & Celeste song too seriously. If Marina is "too ugly" for her new video then what hope do the rest of us have?
Understandably, Marina's tweet was quickly seized upon - leading some fans to attack her UK label 679, who were forced to make the following statement on their Twitter account: "679 did not make the decision to hold the Marina video for further edits. & we don't think Marina's ugly, we're not blind". Equally, they are not insane. Unlike US label, Atlantic Records.
Marina is remarkably well humoured about the situation, perhaps noting the Atlantic record exec's insanity, as she followed up her initial tweet thusly: "The video will be out end of the week. If not, I am happy to leak the 'minger' version for my fans." An endearing reaction considering the quite ridiculous situation.
679's tweet effectively confirmed the veracity of the situation but of course, we're yet to hear from Atlantic - and while record labels hardly have a history of innocence, it's possible that some sort of misunderstanding may have occurred. That or they're gleefully rubbing their hands at the subsequent attention that the new single has received.
As a song on its own merits however, it's something of a disappointment - then again I have found Marina & The Diamonds' second album output vastly inferior to the excellent pop anthems of debut record, 'The Family Jewels'. But if you've been enjoying the electro of 'Electra Heart' then 'How To Be A Heartbreaker' should satisfy. All we can say, is that the video better be good now.
