Last night, Mercury Music Prize winners The xx unleashed their new single, 'Angels' - our first glimpse of material from the forthcoming 'Coexist' album, which will be released in September. Listen to the quietly rousing track below.
Back at Christmas, we heard 'Open Eyes', a demo recorded in the making of this new album. Whether a finalised version will appear on 'Coexist' isn't quite clear yet but regardless, 'Angels' is an excellent introduction. Romy's breathy vocals are more prominent than on the self-titled debut but once again matched by a wonderfully minimalist background.
There's almost a dream-pop vibe here, although perhaps the exclusion of Oliver's vocals is slightly detrimental - it's hard not to imagine his input emboldening 'Angels'. Nonetheless, this is a fine effort, and maintains our expectations for the forthcoming album.
'Coexist' is out on September 10th. Find more info at thexx.info.
